Apple Crisp
Featuring Salty Provisions BUTTER SALT
There's nothing quite like the smell of warm apples, cinnamon, and buttery crumble baking in the oven. Especially when you know there's a scoop of vanilla ice cream waiting to go on top.
This homemade Apple Crisp has everything we love about a classic fall dessert: tender, cinnamon-spiced apples, a golden oat crumble, and just the right balance of sweet and salty thanks to BUTTER SALT.
But here's the fun part. You can make it your own!
Love cinnamon? Add a little extra. Want more crunch? Toss some chopped pecans or walnuts into the topping. Prefer a little more spice? Play around with cardamom, nutmeg, or your favorite fall flavors.
And don't skip the BUTTER SALT! That little bit of salt helps balance the sweetness of the apples, brown sugar, and buttery topping, bringing all those warm flavors together.
Pro tip: Use a mix of sweet and tart apples for more depth of flavor, and let the crisp rest for a few minutes after baking so those delicious juices have time to thicken.
Serve it warm with vanilla ice cream and a drizzle of caramel sauce. Because some desserts are just better with both.

- 1 tbsp. lemon juice
- 2 tsp. vanilla extract
- ⅓ cup granulated sugar
- 1 tbsp. ground cinnamon (adjust to taste)
- 2 tbsp. all-purpose flour
Crisp Topping
- 1½ cups old-fashioned oats
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- ¾ cup brown sugar
- 2 tsp. ground cinnamon
- 1 tsp. ground cardamom
- 1 tsp. vanilla extract
- 1½ sticks (¾ cup) unsalted butter, melted and cooled
Optional for Serving
- Vanilla ice cream
- Caramel sauce
Directions
1. Preheat the oven.
Preheat your oven to 350°F. Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
2. Prepare the crisp topping.
In a large bowl, combine the oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and cardamom. Add the vanilla extract and melted butter, stirring with a fork until the mixture forms coarse, buttery crumbles. Set aside.
3. Prepare the apples.
In a separate large bowl, toss the sliced apples with lemon juice and vanilla extract.
4. Season the filling.
In a small bowl, combine the granulated sugar, cinnamon, and flour. Sprinkle over the apples and toss until evenly coated.
5. Add the BUTTER SALT.
Sprinkle Salty Provisions BUTTER SALT over the apple mixture and toss gently to distribute.
6. Assemble the crisp.
Spread the seasoned apples evenly in the prepared baking dish. Sprinkle the crisp topping over the apples, covering them completely.
7. Bake.
Bake for 45–55 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbling around the edges. The apples should be tender when pierced with a fork.
8. Cool slightly and serve.
Allow the apple crisp to rest for 10–15 minutes before serving. Enjoy warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and a drizzle of caramel sauce.
Make It Your Own!
The best apple crisp is the one you make your own! Try experimenting with different ingredients and flavors:
Adjust the sweetness: Use less sugar for a more tart apple crisp, or add a little extra for a sweeter dessert.
Mix up the apples: Combine tart Granny Smith apples with sweeter Honeycrisp or Fuji apples for a balance of flavors.
Add some crunch: Mix chopped pecans or walnuts into the crisp topping.
Experiment with spices: Add nutmeg, ginger, or extra cardamom for a different take on classic apple crisp.
Finish with a little extra flavor: Try a light sprinkle of BUTTER SALT over the warm crisp just before serving.
